There’s a lot of noise out there right now about podcasting—especially video podcasting. Everyone’s shouting about YouTube, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, 4K setups, fancy mics, and how you need to be doing it all if you want to grow.
Here’s the truth most people won’t tell you:
Starting a podcast without a plan is a waste of time.
And yes, that includes video.
Video podcasting can be a powerful tool. It gives you more ways to show up online. More channels. More engagement. More content to repurpose. But video alone doesn’t equal growth. If you’re publishing full video episodes on YouTube or Spotify and just hoping people will care… you’re probably disappointed by the results.
Because here’s what actually matters:
1.
What do you want people to get from your podcast?
Not just “tech news” or “interesting convos.” Get specific.
Are you helping beginner creators avoid gear mistakes? Are you breaking down business advice for solo founders over 40? Are you telling honest stories about parenting and burnout?
If your episode doesn’t have a clear takeaway, your listener won’t either. And they won’t come back.
2.
Who is this really for?
You can’t market to “everyone.”
You can’t create something that appeals to “anyone interested in tech” or “people who like good interviews.”
Try this instead:
“This podcast is for blind creators looking to navigate video workflows with accessible tools.”
“This show is for overworked marketers who want to build an audience without turning into influencers.”
The more specific you get, the easier it is to grow—because you’ll finally know where to find your people and how to talk to them.
3.
Why should someone listen to this episode, right now?
This is where so many creators go wrong. They hit record without knowing what the hook is. Without knowing what problem they’re solving, what conversation they’re contributing to, or what value they’re offering.
If you can’t sum up why someone should care within 10 seconds, neither will your audience.
Tell them clearly—right at the top—what’s in it for them.
“This episode is going to save you hours of editing time.”
“You’ll learn how to land your first brand deal—without a huge audience.”
“Today we’re talking about burnout, and what no one tells you until it’s too late.”
Be blunt. Be clear. Respect their time.
So… where does video fit in?
Video is leverage.
It gives you content to clip and repurpose. It helps you show up on platforms where people are already scrolling. It lets your personality shine and helps build trust faster. That’s all real.
But video is not your strategy.
You don’t need to become a YouTuber to grow a podcast. You don’t need to publish every episode in full video. You don’t need a three-camera studio with perfect lighting.
Instead, focus on this:
- Start with what you can actually sustain.
- Record solid audio. Capture video if you can.
- Use video strategically—cut short clips, post them to where your audience lives, and point back to your show.
TL;DR?
Podcasting is powerful. But only if you know what you’re doing—and who you’re doing it for.
Don’t jump into video just because “everyone else is doing it.”
Have a plan. Know your hook. Know your audience. Then hit record.
Everything else? That’s just noise.
